The LPGA Tour named Michael Whan as its new commissioner on Wednesday.

Whan takes the place of acting commissioner Marty Evans, who took over for Carolyn Bivens after she was forced out by players in July.

A letter penned by several players voiced their displeasure with Evans due to several controversial issues and the Tour losing several tournaments. Among the more unpopular decrees was one last year that the LPGA would require all of its players to learn and speak English by the end of 2009 or face suspension. That decree was eventually dropped.

Whan has a background in golf as he formerly worked for TaylorMade and Wilson golf companies. His most recent position was president of Mission-Itech Hockey.

"We established very strict criteria for the position of Commissioner and Mike impressed us not only with his background and intellect but also his passion for golf," said LPGA Board of Directors Chairman Dawn Hudson. "I commend the Search Committee for their exhaustive work and commitment, and we look forward to the months and years ahead with Mike as our Commissioner."

Evans will stay on the rest of the year and will help Whan transition into the new position starting in January.

"We also owe a great debt of gratitude to Acting Commissioner Marty Evans," Hudson added. "Her success over the past three months during a potentially difficult transition period not only allowed the Search Committee time to conduct a thorough search but also has provided our new Commissioner with positive momentum and a revitalized platform upon which to grow the LPGA in the sports and business marketplace."
