MIR ALI, Pakistan (AP) — The Pakistani military says 28 militants and five soldiers have been killed in 24 hours of fighting in South Waziristan.
The military's offensive near the Afghan border was launched last month and aims to force out the Pakistani Taliban, which is blamed for most of the suicide bombings in Pakistan.
While the fighting rages, two intelligence officials say suspected U.S. missiles have killed two alleged militants in a house in a northwestern tribal region.
But, a local tribesman claims the house was empty and no one died. The area struck is believed to be under the control of a warlord involved in fighting U.S. and NATO troops in Afghanistan.
In the Khyber tribal region, meanwhile, local officials say militants blew up a girls' school. It's the second destruction of a school in the area this week.
