NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- A federal lawsuit filed Monday accuses a Middle Tennessee school district of promoting Christianity in violation of the U.S. Constitution.

The suit was filed in Nashville on behalf of two current Cheatham County students and two former students. They are seeking an injunction.

The complaint states the schools showed a pattern of endorsing religion that included the distribution of Gideon's Bibles in class and sectarian prayers at school events.

Executive Director Hedy Weinberg of the American Civil Liberties Union of Tennessee, which filed the suit, said attorneys worked with the school district for six months to try to reach an agreement before suing.

School district representatives did not immediately return calls from The Associated Press.
