The following is a news release issued by the Fayette County Sheriff’s Department:

SOMERVILLE, TN -- The ongoing investigation into the accidental death of 9-year-old Dante Boyd of Somerville has led detectives to conclude that Boyd’s wound was not self-inflicted as originally thought, but instead was caused by his 8-year-old brother who was playing with the weapon and accidentally fired it striking Boyd.

This information was derived from preliminary information provided by the Shelby County Medical Examiner’s Office as well as statements taken from the child.

Detectives say that this fact does not change anything relating to the charges placed against Boyd’s stepfather Willie Allen. Per District Attorney General Mike Dunavant, no charges will be filed against the 8-year-old in the case as the incident is still being ruled an accident. The 8-year-old’s name is not being released.

Willie Allen is still in the Fayette County Jail being held with no bond. Detectives say the case is still an open investigation with regard to Allen and his current charges.
