MEMPHIS, TN – A mixture of rain and sleet will continue for the Memphis metro area through the afternoon. Mainly rain is expected through the evening.
After midnight, a mixture of rain and snow is expected, but amounts will be lighter. Surface temperatures will remain one or two degrees above freezing through midnight, so only minor travel issues are expected. Be careful on bridges and overpasses or any elevated surface as ice may build on these areas.
The temperature is expected to drop below freezing after midnight causing icy spots and hazardous driving conditions.
Light snow is possible Tuesday morning with little to no accumulation.
Memphis & Shelby County EMA Update:Road Crews Prepare for another Round of Winter Weather Public works crews throughout Shelby County continue to spread salt and sand on area roads in preparation for more sleet and snow tonight.
“Representatives of various city and county bureaus are monitoring weather conditions at the Emergency Operations Center. Our main concerns now are to keep the roadways open and ensure an immediate response to neighborhoods affected by power outages,” said Bob Nations, Director of the Shelby County Office of Preparedness.
So far, there have been no major power outages in Shelby County. However, the winter weather has caused as many as 100 traffic crashes. There were no serious injuries.
Up to five inches of snow fell throughout Shelby County early this morning. By mid-morning snow had melted on most streets. However, after 1 p.m., a combination of rain, sleet and snow resumed. The next round of winter weather to hit the area tonight could make for dangerous driving conditions since temperatures are expected to remain at or near the freezing mark.
Memphis Mayor A C Wharton, Shelby County Mayor Joe Ford and other municipal mayors are being kept informed about the weather from the Emergency Operations Center. Representatives of public works, law enforcement, fire and emergency services are coordinating their resources and will stay abreast of weather developments throughout the night and tomorrow.
