DeSoto County Sheriff’s Department
MEDIA RELEASE
16 November 2009

DeSoto County Sheriff’s Department investigators have arrested 23 year old Joey Johnson of Horn Lake, Mississippi on child sex charges.

Johnson has been charged with multiple counts of Sexual Battery 97-3-95 Section (2) which prohibits sexual penetration with a child under the age of eighteen (18) years of age if the person is in a position of trust or authority over the child including without limitation the child’s teacher, counselor, physician, minister, priest, physical therapist, chiropractor, legal guardian, parent, stepparent, aunt, uncle, scout leader or coach. The alleged violations occurred during the current school year and involve multiple victims.

At the time of the alleged violation, Johnson was working as a substitute teacher at the Lake Cormorant High School in DeSoto County. DeSoto County Sheriff’s investigators urge any other unidentified victims to contact the sheriff’s investigators by calling 662-429-1470 or visiting the sheriff’s office located at 311 West South Street in Hernando, MS.

Because this is an ongoing investigation, we are not at liberty to discuss additional case specifics. We appreciate your understanding and cooperation on this matter.
Bond for Johnson has been set at: $100,000

The following is a statement issued by DeSoto County Schools:

We are aware of the allegations but this is not a DeSoto County School employee. This involves a background-approved temporary services employee who was substitute teaching for our schools. He was an employee of Kelley Services. He has been removed from eligibility to substitute at DCS while this matter is under investigation. The alleged incident did not occur on school premises.
