MEMPHIS, TN – Parents like Corey Yates are looking for answers and they’re not getting any. “Once I drop my son off for school, there shouldn’t be no reason for him to leave, and my question is if he does leave, who allowed him to leave?”
More than 24 hours have passed since an East High student told police she was sexually assaulted by five people. Investigators say four of the suspects are also East High students. Mays and other parents didn’t even know about the attack until myEyewitnessNews.com told them. “It’s a concern by me having a child here, not hearing anything about it. I would love to have heard something about it,” says Mays.
Investigators say a fellow student picked the girl up from school around 11:30a.m., on March 9, 2010. Memphis Police Spokesperson Karen Rudolph says he took her to an abandoned home at 278 Red Oak where four others were waiting. “She’s been sexually assaulted and its something she’ll never forget. It’s going to be tough. She’ll have a tough road ahead of her and hopefully things will work out.”
While three students are behind bars, the search continues for two others. Memphis City Schools released a written statement only saying it can’t comment. That leaves East High parents with several concerns and questions. “I’m furious about that because I’m a very devoted parent when it comes to my daughter,” says a concerned MCS parent who chose to remain anonymous.
