EARLE, AR-The threat of tornadoes is not something people in
Earle, Arkansas, want to hear about right now. It’s because many in the small town are still recovering from a tornado that touched down in May 2008. That twister caused millions of dollars worth of damage.
Forecasts show severe weather could pass through the area the evening of Friday, March 27, 2009. Earle Resident Mildred Russell is worried. “All I can say, if they say it's coming towards Earle, I’m going to leave,” she says.
Russell’s grandson Darrick lost his home to the 2008 twister. “I had a house, I lost it, and I’m buying this lot to rebuild. It was a mess, it took a lot of work, but I got it cleaned up and I’m going to start over,” he says.
According to the Institute for Business and Home Safety, these tips won't make your home tornado-proof, but here are some things you can do to increase your chance of surviving one.
Decide in advance where you'll take shelter, and if a tornado hits, go there immediately. Move anything in your yard that could become flying debris inside your home. Put together an emergency kit that has a 3-day supply of food and water, and you can also include other things like a flash light, extra set keys and important phone numbers.
