MEMPHIS, TN – Memphis police say a man admitted to falsely reporting that he had been carjacked to cover for the real reason he wrecked his car.
Memphis police spokesperson Karen Rudolph says officers were called to Methodist South Hospital about a man who had been carjacked, Saturday, November 7, 2009, around 5:45 a.m. According to Rudolph, 39-year-old Darrell Williams told officers that he was at the intersection of Kassel and Shelby Drive around 3:10 a.m. when an armed man jumped into his car. Williams said he began to fight with the carjacker when he lost control of his 2004 Mazda 6 and crashed in the 800 block of Shelby Drive.
Rudolph says MPD robbery officers interviewed Williams about the report on Monday, November 9th. That is when, Rudolph says Williams admitted that he lied about the carjacking. He told the officers that he really wrecked his car while he was trying to change the station on his radio.
Darrell Williams has been charged with filing a false report.
