WEST MEMPHIS, AR --- Fireworks celebrations on the Fourth of July can be fun, but they can also be dangerous. Eyewitness News uncovers ways to keep your family safe.
There are a lot of fireworks to choose from and some of them can be dangerous. Doctors say a Little Rock boy could have scars for the rest of his life after getting second degree burns while playing with fireworks. The boy was with a group of kids when they found some fireworks and decided to light them without adult supervision.
Mom Talisha Brooks says that's a big mistake. She says, "Be right there if you think they are doing something they shouldn’t be doing tell them no right then. You got to be there on the scene."
In addition to keeping watchful eye, Donna Rose says she lays down the rules with her 17 year-old son before the first match is lit. Rose says, "He knows he's not to shoot towards cars, dry grass, or things like that. We play it safe."
These moms hope the only lasting thing from their 4th of July celebrations are memories and not scars.
The National Fireworks Safety Council offers some advice for a safe celebration.
-Never give fireworks to children.
-Always keep a bucket of water or water hose handy
-Wear safety glasses
-Never alter or combine fireworks
-Never use homemade fireworks or illegal explosives
-Obey the local fireworks laws in your town or city
