MEMPHIS, TN - Just two days before Christmas, more than 200 employees at Quebecor World are without a job. The plant in Olive Branch, Mississippi, shut down Wednesday, December 23, 2009.
Some employees have found new jobs. Some hope to transfer to the company's other locations. Others are heading to the unemployment office.
Greg Berghorn says “It has never happened before where they have closed down a plant so it is different for me.” He goes on to say “I don’t have a job lined up so hopefully I will be able to transfer to Jonesboro.”
George Curry has worked at the plant for more than 40 years. Curry says “I’m retiring so I feel good. I feel sad for some of the other people.”
Ken Jeffries has worked at the facility since 1987. Jeffries says he plans to go back to college.
“I’ve always wanted to leave this place so now I got my chance. I got nothing to hold me back from moving on.”
Some employees were given severance pay. The printing company has other facilities in Memphis, Jonesboro, Arkansas, and Corinth, Mississippi.
