JACKSON, MS (AP) - The Tate County School District has a new interim conservator.

The Mississippi Board of Education approved this past week the appointment of James Malone, who will soon retire from Nettleton public schools in Lee County.

The state is taking over Tate County schools for financial reasons.

Malone will be paid $850 a day.

The school district will reportedly face a deficit of about $1.2 million and won't be able to make payroll June 30, 2009. The district built schools with proceeds from a bond issue but does not have enough money to run all the schools.

In March, the board approved a contract for Bob Strebeck, conservator of North Panola schools, to oversee the Tate County district until an interim conservator could be appointed.
