MEMPHIS, Tenn.  -  Violet, the black lab, who ran away after police shot at her, was returned home safely Saturday night.  The dog’s owner, Anna Bolton, says the dog was hiding under a porch not too far from her High Point Terrace home.

The dog got out Thursday when police went to check on an alarm at Bolton’s home.  The officers fired at her two dogs in the back yard, hitting “Bing” who will recover from his injuries. Violet ran away.

Memphis police defended the shootings, saying the shooting was in self-defense.  The SPCA of Memphis says it all could have been prevented.  The organization offered a $1,000 reward for Violet’s safe return.

The woman who found the dog will get the money.

In another development in this story, a Memphis woman, Lashira McClain was charged with extortion, accused of sending text messages to Bolton claiming she had the dog.

One of the messages said “I have your lab dog” and another asked for money in exchange for returning the dog.

McClain has a court appearance scheduled for Monday.
