MEMPHIS, TN – Memphis police say an officer shot a dog after he was bitten while trying to arrest a man wanted on a Felony warrant.
It happened in the 5100 block of Ginger Circle, Monday, November 9, 2009, around 8:22 a.m.
Memphis police spokesperson Karen Rudolph says when officers arrived to make the arrest, they saw three people run inside the home. Officers knocked on the door at which time they heard a dog barking. Rudolph says the officers yelled to anyone inside the house to secure the dog before opening the door. The mother of the wanted man, Rudolph says, opened the door and the dog charged the officers and bit one of them in the groin. That is when the officer shot the animal, according to Rudolph.
Rudolph says the dog ran back inside the home and was not killed.
The officer was taken to the hospital in non-critical condition.
The Memphis Police Department’s Inspectional Service is conducting an investigation at this time.
