MEMPHIS, TN - It's official, guns are not allowed in Memphis city parks.

The Memphis City Council approved the ordinance on its third and final reading at its meeting Tuesday, July 21, 2009. The city ordinance is in response to the state law that allows guns in parks. The new law takes effect September 1, 2009.

A provision in the law allows local governments to opt out. Germantown and Shelby County have both voted to ban guns in local parks. Arlington, Collierville and Lakeland are also expected to decide the issue before the state law takes effect.

Bartlett city leaders delayed voting on its gun ban resolution.
