MEMPHIS, TN --- Memphis Police have arrested 38 year-old Xavier Crawford. He's accused of raping an 18 year-old girl and could also be connected to the beating and carjacking of a 67 year-old woman. Both attacks happened on Tuesday, February 17, 2009 in Raleigh.

Shortly after 8:00 p.m. Wednesday night, detectives with the Criminal Apprehension Team acted on a tip and found Crawford inside a home in north Shelby County near Brunswick Rd. and Godwin Rd.

Crawford is a former University of Memphis football star. He was known as "X-Man" on the field. He has had several run-ins with the law over the years.

One of the most publicized incidents involved a domestic dispute with his then-girlfriend and former Memphis city council woman Patricia Vander Schaaf back in 2007.

Memphis Police say Crawford's last known address was at a home in the Windermere Woods Condominiums. Investigators say his home is also where he raped an 18 year-old woman yesterday.

Neighbor Sonia Kinkle is shocked. She says "It's a shame that happened to someone like that..it just scares you."

That same fear spread less than a mile away to the Lake Windermere Community. That's where Memphis police say a 67 year-old woman was beaten and carjacked in the driveway of her home.

One of her neighbors Willie White says, "It's hard to imagine. It's very close to home. Makes you want to be on your guard."

Police will not confirm if Crawford is responsible for both attacks.

White says, "My prayers go out to the families and I can't believe something like this happened to neighbors. It's a terrible sadness that something like this has to happen."

Another twist to this case: The home where Xavier Crawford lived and where police say he raped the 18 year-old woman matches the address of Pat Vander Schaaf. Friends and family members we talked to say despite the high profile domestic abuse case and restraining order, the two were still seeing each other and lived together.
