MEMPHIS, TN - Memphis City Schools is getting a $90 million boost from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. School board members unanimously approved the agreement late Wednesday afternoon, November 18, 2009.

The money will be used to improve how teachers are hired, placed and kept on the job.
The school district will receive money twice a year over seven years. It will be supplemented by a local match of $3 million a year over the next six-and-a- half years, which will be raised from private funders.

Since 2000, the Gates Foundation has invested $2 billion in school reform.
