The office of MS’s Northern District Public Service Commissioner sent the following news release to myEyewitnessNews.com:

Nettleton, Mississippi (September 9, 2009) –  Northern District Public Service Commissioner Brandon Presley wants telephone customers to know about a program called Lifeline, which offers financial help to customers who are struggling to pay their bills.  During "National Lifeline Awareness Week", September 14-20, Presley will join local officials across North Mississippi to promote the program and get the word out to consumers. The Lifeline program provides a discount on qualifying customer’s home or cell phone bills of up to $160 a year.

“Lifeline provides real help for real people who need it,” Presley said.  “I want to do all I can to make sure every qualifying telephone customer knows about Lifeline and has an opportunity to apply for the discount.”

Commissioner Presley noted that most Mississippians aren’t even aware that the program exists and how it benefits them.  In an effort to change that, Presley has been working with community organizations, housing authorities and the media to hold Lifeline sign-up events across the district.  To date, over 200 families in the Northern District are now receiving discounts on their monthly telephone bills due to these efforts.

During National Lifeline Awareness Week, Presley is partnering with over a dozen mayors and community leaders to promote the program. Cities and times scheduled for the week of September 14-18 are listed below.  Presley and his staff will be on hand to share information about Lifeline and answer questions regarding the program.

For more information regarding the Lifeline program and how to apply, please plan to join us at these events or you may call Commissioner Presley’s office at 1-800-356-6428 or 1-800-637-7722.
