DESOTO COUNTY, MS - There are no roads closed in DeSoto County, Mississippi, but cops are telling people to just stay home if they can. Monday, slushy, icy conditions led to dozens of minor accidents on DeSoto County roads, but most people agree, it could've been a lot worse.

Armed with two back hoes and some other heavy equipment, M & H Construction workers cleared high traffic areas, like Goodman Road. They’ve been contracted by the city of Southaven to do this work.

“Just trying to keep people safe” says M & H worker D.C. Harris. “Keep them out of the ditches and from running into one another.”

These main arteries are the top priority for crews. Harris says some of the less-traveled streets in DeSoto County may still be a bit treacherous.

“Like College Road-- it still has got a good cover on it. People need to use caution” says Harris.

Driver Walker Wright says he's taking that advice.

“I’m going slower and paying attention and getting back home so I won't have to be out” says Wright.

Road crews will be on standby tonight so if things get really nasty and re-freeze, they'll be out again on Tuesday to clear the roads in DeSoto County.

The Mississippi Highway Patrol has responded to about 40 calls of drivers sliding off roads due to the ice. If you have problems on the roads in Mississippi, call 911 or *47 and a trooper will be out to help you.
