MEMPHIS, TN - Germantown has joined the list of cities taking aim at the issue of guns in parks.

Tennessee Governor Phil Bredesen recently signed a new state law that allows legal handgun owners to carry in parks around the state, but cities have the option to ban the practice.

Germantown’s Board of Aldermen will consider a resolution to ban guns in city parks at its July 13, 2009 meeting. The city police department wants it to pass.

“I know some sporting events parents can get heated, and heated arguments lead to violence and somebody might try go out and get a gun out of their car,” said Inspector Frank Hester.

Under the state law, guns will be allowed in parks around the state beginning September 1, 2009, but if the Germantown city leaders adopt the gun ban resolution, signs will be posted saying guns aren't allowed in city parks.

If the resolution passes and someone's caught breaking the law, he or she could spend just under a year in jail and face a $2500 fine.

The City of Memphis is considering a similar proposal.
