MEMPHIS, TN- Mid-South courts will soon start putting GPS systems on people out on bail. The trackers will be monitored by Memphis Police Officers in the “Real Time Crime Center.”
Trackers will be put on people from Lauderdale, Tipton, Fayette, and Shelby Counties in Tennessee. It will include offenders in Crittenden County, Arkansas and Desoto County, Mississippi. As many as 2,000 people could be put on the GPS systems at a cost of $2 million.
Right now about 300 convicted sex offenders in Tennessee wear the devices. Memphis Police say the trackers will allow them to see where offenders are in real time. That means if someone out on bail commits a crime, they will be able to tell if the offender is in the area at the time of the crime.
