MEMPHIS, TN – Now is the time to get your H1N1 vaccine for free. The Memphis and Shelby County Health Department will start giving free vaccinations Tuesday.
“There will be an ample supply,” said Dr. Helen Morrow, the health department’s chief medical officer. “It's an ongoing or very fluid number, but we have several thousand doses in hand right now."
Doctors say the number of H1N1 cases in Shelby County have slowed down since last month, but the need for protection remains.
“We're expecting it to return when the cold weather really hits, and it's starting to hit,” explained Dr. Bryan Simmons, of Methodist University Hospital.
He said those who have already been vaccinated have helped slow the spread of the virus.
“We had enough people to get ill that we now probably have some of that herd immunity which means we can't spread it easily from person to person,” Simmons said.
Morrow said focusing on vaccinations for everyone will make sure the virus doesn't continue to spread.
