MEMPHIS, TN - The search is on for a missing dog; but not just any dog, a wife and mother depends on his ears.

6-year-old, Nate, a brindle greyhound is a retired racing dog; but over the last 3 years he's become a critical part of the Temple family.

On May 11th, Nate went missing near the Gentle Care Animal Hospital.

Everyday since, Carol Temple, the dog's owner, has spent hours behind grocery stores and searching wooded areas hoping to see her lost dog.

"We've put out flyers... and I've put it on Craigslist, Facebook and we've been to shelters," Temple says.

Temple lost her hearing at birth and four weeks ago she lost her hearing tool, 6-year-old Nate.

The brindle greyhound, and retired race dog has been acting as Temple's ears for the last three years.

"When both my husband and son are not home I need somebody to listen to the doorbell," Temple continues, "if I'm taking a nap he'll give me a nudge on the bed and tell me someone's at the door."

Carol Temple's husband, Kevin says, "It's torn us up on the inside, it's been an emotional roller coaster these last four weeks the highs and lows."

Nate slipped out of his collar at Covington Pike and Stage Road.

More than 50 Mid-South Greyhound Adoption Option volunteers have joined the Temple's in hanging flyers and searching the woods; hoping to bring Nate home.

MSGAO volunteer, Renee Dingler says, "this is unusual because with the Temple's, and Carol's hearing and her dependence on Nate, we really have put out a large effort and its unusual for a dog to be lost this long."

Until Nate returns, Carol Temple will use her eyes to look for him; as for so long he's been her ears for her.

Nate doesn't have a collar or ID on him, but he does have tattoos on the inside of his ears from his former racing days that can help identify him.

If you have information on Nate, you are asked to contact the Mid-South Greyhound Adoption Option at (870)735-7317.
