MEMPHIS, TN – Memphis police say three women are behind bars after reporting a false kidnapping in an attempt to have a stolen car recovered faster.

Memphis Police Public Information Officer Karen Rudolph says a woman called police, Monday June 29, 2009, and reported that her 7-month-old child had been kidnapped during the theft of her friend’s car.

The woman told officers that she and two of her friends had stopped at a convenience store to get something to eat. According to the woman, one of her friends stayed in the car with the child. She told police the car and her child were gone when they came out of the store.

Rudolph says when detectives started to investigate the case they learned that the child had been dropped off at a relative’s home before the women went to the convenience store.

Investigators say the car had been stolen, but not under the circumstances reported by the woman. Rudolph says the women made up the story to “have more assistance” in finding the stolen car.

Jennifer Najim, 17, Laquisha Parks, 18, and 21 year-old Patricia Mullins were all arrested for filing a false report.
