DESOTO COUNTY, MS - Roads and highways in Mississippi proved treacherous for some drivers on Monday. A common sight along I-55 in Mississippi was cars that had hit icy patches and gone off the road. Highway Patrol officers say they've responded to about 40 of these types of incidents.
“The first thing people do is lock their brakes up. The next thing… their vehicle goes out of control” says Sgt. Leslie White with the Mississippi Highway Patrol.
White says there were also about ten wrecks on Mississippi highways. Only one of those resulted in injuries.
“The worst icing this morning was in DeSoto and Marshall Counties” says White.
While I-55, I-69, and U.S. 78 are now pretty clear, temperatures are expected to fall tonight, and White says that could mean re-icing, and more problems for travelers tomorrow.
“If you do have to go to work on Tuesday morning, drive at a safe, slow speed and keep a safe driving distance between you and the other vehicles” says White.
Drivers who do slide off the roadway should call 911 or *47. A trooper will be out to help you.
