Memphis TN- Eyewitness News has uncovered court documents that accuse State Senator Paul Stanley of verbal and physical abuse. In 1994, Stanley’s former wife filed a restraining order against the senator. In Shelby County court records, Judy Stanley claims Paul Stanley was verbally abusive to her and her children. She also claims Stanley hit her three times.
Stanley’s ex-wife says a day after filing the restraining order, Stanley came back to their East Memphis house with a sheriff deputy, packed his bags and moved out. Criminal charges were never filed against Stanley. So far, Paul Stanley has not commented on the abuse claims, but in divorce records he turns the tables and says his ex-wife was the abusive one.
The old claims of abuse, comes on the heels Stanley being in the middle of a sex scandal.
On July 21, 2009 it was revealed that Stanley was having an affair with his 23 year-old legislative intern.
Jackson Baker is a political columnist with the Memphis Flyer. Baker says “my thoughts are this poor man is doomed. He couldn’t be in more trouble unless he was a member of Al Qaeda.”
Stanley resigned from his post as chairman of the Commerce committee, but has yet to resign his senate seat. Baker says Stanley is under pressure from Republicans to give up his seat.
