CORDOVA, TN - A Cordova carjacking on April 24, 2009, involving a teenager was a cover up, according to Shelby County Sheriff's detectives. Investigators say the teen lied to authorities to hide the fact he'd wrecked the family car.
Calling the incident a "hoax," deputies said they found the missing Toyota SUV later in the evening and charged the teen with filing a false report.
During questioning, detectives say the 17 year-old admitted he made up the story so his parents wouldn't find out he'd been in an accident. He and five other teenagers were in the car when he lost control of the SUV on Collierville-Arlington Road in Eads. The group, say deputies, abandoned the vehicle.
Originally, the teen told detectives that three men carjacked him at gunpoint as he sat at the intersection of Berryhill and Macon.
