BARTLETT, TN – Bartlett police say a man was hit by a train severing his leg.

It happened at the railroad overpass at Kirby Whitten Road, Thursday, June 11, 2009, around 6:00 a.m.

According to police, the driver of the train activated the emergency braking system as soon as he saw the man, but it was too late. Police say 19 year-old Kyle Patterson had severe injuries to the lower part of his body, including a severed leg. Patterson was airlifted to The MED.

Investigators say they are trying to figure out how and why Patterson was on the tracks when the train was passing through that area.
