MILLINGTON, TN - Millington officials say a 5-year-old boy died Sunday night after he was swept away in a drainage ditch during a heavy rain storm.
The accident happened Sunday afternoon behind the Walmart Store in the 8400 block of Highway 51 North in Millington. Eyewitness News was told the boy was with a group of children playing near the water.
Millington Police Chief Ray Douglas says the boy fell in the ditch and a strong current pulled him into a nearby drainage pipe which empties into a retention pond on the other side.
Millington Fire Department officials say there were flash floods in the area when the incident occured.
The child was unresponsive when he was taken to Le Bonheur Children’s Medical Center. Doctors pronounced him dead a short time later.
