CLINTON, Tenn. (AP) -- Police in East Tennessee say a woman suspected of shooting her husband wrecked their car while taking him to the hospital because she was drunk.
The Knoxville News Sentinel reported 33-year-old Erica Hopper of Claiborne County remained in the Anderson County Jail on Monday and Charles James Hopper II was in stable condition at University of Tennessee Medical Center.
Anderson County Chief Deputy Mark Lucas said Erica Hopper drove the car off Interstate 75 near the Clinch River bridge Sunday morning.
Lucas said when a deputy arrived, Charles Hopper didn't say he'd been shot, but said he had a "stomach injury." The deputy discovered Hopper had been shot and he was airlifted to the hospital.
Erica Hopper is charged with DUI and aggravated assault.
