MEMPHIS, TN - William "Max" Rose, the 19 year-old son of prominent Memphians Gayle and Mike Rose, died Saturday, January 3, 2008 from injuries he received in a car accident.

Family friends tell Eyewitness News that Rose and two friends, also from Memphis, were headed back to college at the University of Denver when their SUV crashed Friday near Tonkawa, Oklahoma.

Traffic investigators say the Ford Explorer left Interstate 35 and rolled several times before catching on fire. It is not known what caused the wreck or if road conditions played a role in the accident.

Rose was taken to a hospital in Wichita in extremely critical condition suffering from severe external and internal injuries. He died a few hours later.

21 year-old Adrian Doggrell and 19 year-old Theresa "Tess" Dougherty, who was driving the SUV, were also injured.

Rose's mother is Gayle Rose, a Harvard-educated businesswoman, who in 2006, became the CEO of EVS, Electronic Vaulting Services Corp, a company that provides digital data storage and archiving for local companies including First Tennessee.

She is the founder and chairwoman of the The Rose Family Foundation. And she was also part of the team that worked to bring the Grizzlies to Memphis. She's been named among the "Who's Who in Memphis" by Memphis Magazine at least 8 times. Business Tennessee magazine also listed her as one of the "100 Most Powerful People" in Tennessee.

William Rose's father is Mike Rose, a prominent supporter of the University of Memphis and chairman of First Horizon National Corp., the parent company of First Tennessee Bank. He is also the past Chairman and CEO of Holiday Inn and Promus Hotels.

His philanthropic work includes generous gifts to the University of Memphis. The Michael D. Rose Theatre at the school is named after him. The Mike Rose Soccer Complex in Shelby County is named after Max's younger brother, Mikey.

Mike Rose is married to Debbi Fields, the founder of Mrs. Fields Cookies.

Funeral services will held Thursday, January 8th at 10:00 a.m. at Idlewild Presbyterian Church, 1750 Union Ave., Memphis, TN. Burial will follow at Elmwood Cemetery.
