OAKLAND, TN - Oakland Police Officer Joshua Smith was shot at point blank range. Smith survived – saved by his badge. Right now officers throughout the Mid-South are searching for the attackers before they strike again.
From Oakland to across the Mid-South officers are hoping to shield the public from any harm by catching two men that shot through this shield on Christmas Eve. “Anytime you’re in a uniform, anytime you’re in a marked patrol unit, I feel you are a target,” says Oakland Police Sergeant Larnce Wright.
Investigators say Officer Joshua Smith pulled over an SUV for expired tags on Highway 64 in Fayette County. Minutes later he was attacked by the driver and passenger, and shot in the chest at point blank range. “If we got two people who just assaulted a police officer, then I know they will assault an innocent citizen,” says Wright.
The attackers are still on the run and investigators tell myEyewitnessNews.com they have no new leads. MyEyewitnessNews.com has learned the two men were spotted by a Shelby County Sheriff’s Deputy shortly after the shooting but before a “Be On The Lookout (BOLO) bulletin was issued.
Officer Smith is at home recovering with his family.
