MEMPHIS, TN - A 15-year-old has been charged with murdering a fellow high school student. Lashune Fuller was arrested Wednesday after 18-year-old Daniel Levi Brown was shot and killed walking home from Raleigh-Egypt High School. Police say that this shooting may be retaliation for a fight at the school a couple days ago. Near the school Thursday, it was obvious police are on high alert.
Jim Abernathy lives near Raleigh-Egypt High School. He says he sees fights start outside the school and continue all the way down his street.
"It's not just like 5 or 6,” he said. “I'm talking about 100 or 200 people just coming down here. It's crazy."
Thursday, cops swarmed around the school. Police say they stepped up patrols after the shooting. They checked out at least one house nearby neighbors say has been vacant. Daniel Levi Brown was shot multiple times just before three yesterday just blocks away from the school.
Supt. Kriner Cash says he's looking into what happened and ensures kids are safe at school.
"Many of our children see and are dealing with violence in their lives everyday,” Cash said. “So they come to school angry often and the slightest thing sets them off."
Police say a riot at the school days ago stemmed from a food fight. Senior Ellis Walton says the school is getting a bad reputation.
"It's not the school,” Walton said. “It's just certain things that go on outside and around the school. We actually do learn things and feel safe, but it's certain stuff that go on outside and around the school."
Police say the teen in custody did not have the weapon at school. Lashune Fuller makes his next court appearance December 9th.
