Back pain exam
It's estimated that eight out of 10 people will suffer from some form of back pain at some time during their lives. Although back pain is more likely to occur between the ages of 30 and 50, it can happen at any age.
Causes of back pain
Anything that places pressure on your back muscles or nerves can cause back pain. Back pain is the number one problem facing the workforce in the United States today.
Diseases of the spine
If you're suffering pain in your neck or shoulder, tingling or numbness in your arms, or have experienced some weakness when using your arms or hands, you may have a spinal disease.
Herniated discs
One of the most dramatic injuries you can sustain to your lower back is a herniated disc. The discs along your spine hold the vertebrae in place. Sometimes the center of a disc squeezes through a crack in the outer layer into the spinal canal.
Lower back pain
Lower back pain is the number one problem facing the workforce in the United States today. It's the second most common cause of missed workdays, the leading cause of disability between the ages of 19 to 45, and the number one leading impairment in occupational injuries.
Non-surgical treatment
Back injuries have become one of the most common problems today, but in most cases it can be treated without enduring a surgical procedure. If you sustain a back injury or feel back pain, you may want to consult a physician, especially if the problem persists.
Pinched nerves
Pinched nerves can occur anywhere in your spine, causing pain that affects nearly every part of your body, including your arms, fingers, wrists, shoulders, head, legs, knees, ankles, feet, and toes.
Sciatica/pain down the leg
The sciatic (sigh-AT-ik) nerve provides sensation and controls the muscles of your lower back and legs. Sciatica is compressive pain, or nerve related pain, that occurs when those nerve roots are irritated or pinched.
Self-treatment
Just because you suffer from back pain doesn't necessarily mean you must see a doctor to solve the problem. Self-treatment can sometimes be the only cure you need to deal with back pain.
Types of back pain
Back pain afflicts two-thirds of all adults at least once during their lifetime. It is the most prevalent medical disorder in industrialized societies and the leading cause of disability between the ages of 19 and 45.
When to call a doctor for back pain
Although most back pain is caused by injuries that can heal in several days, there are times when you may need to contact a doctor. Particular injuries, such as injuries to your neck or cervical spine, may require emergency treatment and the immediate attention of your doctor.
