Steering systems

Your car's steering wheel controls the position of the front wheels and makes maneuvering the car possible. The steering wheel controls a shaft that's connected to the steering gear. When you move the wheel, the shaft rotates and turns the gear left or right, which ultimately turns the outside wheel. A rack and pinion steering system is standard equipment on most cars made after 1980. This system uses a pinion gear attached to the steering shaft that fits into grooves on the tie rods. Rack and pinion is the simplest type of steering system and delivers accurate maneuverability without much effort. Almost all cars built since the seventies have power steering. In this system, a power steering pump circulates hydraulic fluid around the steering gear to make turning your car's wheels a lot easier.
