NASHVILLE, TN -- Former Titans quarterback Steve McNair and a woman have been found shot and killed in downtown Nashville.
Nashville police said McNair suffered a fatal gunshot wound to the head. The incident happened in an apartment/condominium complex in downtown Nashville near 2nd South and Lea Avenue.
Titans owner Bud Adams released a brief statement Saturday. Adams called McNair "one of the finest players to play for our organization and one of the most beloved players by our fans. He played with unquestioned heart and leadership and led us to places that we had never reached, including our only Super Bowl."
McNair began his career in 1995 with the Houston Oilers, who eventually became the Tennessee Titans. He led the team to four playoff appearances, including the Super Bowl after the 1999 season. He was chosen co-MVP of the league in 2003, sharing the award with Colts quarterback and former Tennessee Vol Peyton Manning, after throwing for 3,215 yards and 24 touchdowns with only seven interceptions.
He played in the NFL for 13 seasons, most recently with the Baltimore Ravens.
After McNair's retirement in April 2008, Titans coach Jeff Fisher said, "Steve was the face of this franchise when we arrived here, and I think in a lot of ways will always be one of the faces of this franchise."
The 36 year-old father of four boys was married. He was from Mount Olive, Mississippi in Covington County, which is southeast of Jackson. It's reported his wife, Mechelle, was in Mississippi at the time of the shooting.
He played at Alcorn State in Lorman, Mississippi with his brother, Tim.
McNair and his family have been helping helping charities for years through the Steve McNair Foundation. It is based in Hattiesburg, Mississippi and focuses on helping children's charities which empower kids.
He held a football camp for kids as recently as May 29th at Goodpasture Christian School just outside of Nashville.
