MEMPHIS, TN – Dirty hands and no covers. That is just a couple of concerns at some Mid-South daycare centers.

Nanna’s Care Family Day Home, south of the U of M area, received high marks for:

  • Helping children understanding language.

  • For the way it disciplines children.

State Concerns:

  • A toddler was allowed to walk around while drinking his bottle. According to the state, toddlers should be seated or have their heads dropped when holding their own bottle or sippy cups.

  • Children’s hands were not washed after their diapers were changed.

  • Wipes were not used on the providers’ hands after removing a dirty diaper and before putting on the clean diaper, as required by the state.

  • An observer with the state also says children’s hands were not washed with soap and running water before and after bottle feeding.

Nanna’s Care Family Day Home received zero stars.

Joshua’s Learning Tree Inc. in Midtown Memphis received high marks for:

  • The way staff interacts with children.

  • Use of TV, video and computers.

State Concerns:

  • The Toddler’s room is “L-Shaped.” That meant when staffers were working at the sink area, they could not see the children playing around the corner. The state requires that daycare centers be arranged so children can be supervised without major difficulties.

  • When children put toys in their mouths, the toys were not removed and sanitized. Instead, the children either continued playing with the toys or the toys were put back on the shelves.

Joshua’s Learning Tree received three stars.

Happy Hearts Family Child Care in southeast Memphis received high marks for:

  • Helping children reason.

  • Meals and snacks.

State Concerns:

  • A state observer had a concern about naptime at the center. Two children had just one cover each and one child had no covers. The state requires that each child have two covers, one for the top and one for the bottom.

  • Wood chips near the swings and slide were less than one inch thick. The state requires six inches.

Happy Hearts received two stars.
