MEMPHIS, TN – Use a cloth to wipe down a baby’s changing table, use the same cloth to wipe off a dining table… Sounds pretty gross, right? Well, that is exactly what happened at a southeast Memphis daycare.

The state gave Prestigious Learning Academy in South Memphis high marks for:

  • Helping children understand language.

  • Schedule of daily activities.

State concerns:

  • The children’s coats and backpacks were stored on hooks and came into contact with each other. According to the state, children’s personal items should not come into contact with each other because it could lead to the spread of germs.

  • A state observer says children touched toys, the floor and each other before and after washing their hands for meals. The state requires children to have their hands washed with soap and running water before and after meals.

Overall, Prestigious Learning Academy received three stars.

Holiness Children Enrichment Center in South Memphis received high marks for:

  • Encouraging children to communicate.

  • The way it supervised children.

State concerns:

  • The state says children and staff did not wash their hands after coughing and sneezing into their hands.

  • Items labeled “Keep Out of Reach of Children” need to kept locked away when they are not being used.

Overall, Holiness Child Enrichment Center received two stars.

Loving Care For Little Ones in Southeast Memphis received high marks for:

  • The way it supervised play and learning.

  • The way staff interacted with the children.

State concerns:

  • Furniture used for play and feeding wasn’t “Child-Sized”. The state say none of the children’s feet touched the floor when sitting in the chairs. The table was so high, the children could not rest their elbows comfortably.

  • The table was not cleaned or sanitized before or after a snack. Observers say that in fact, the table was wiped with the same wash cloth which had been used on the diaper changing table.

  • An observer also says several times teachers and students did not wash their hands before and after meals.

Loving Care For Little Ones received zero stars.
