MEMPHIS, TN – Children playing near a pot of hot water and electrical cords dangling low where little hands could grab them are just some of the concerns at Memphis area daycares.
Balmoral Baptist Church Preschool on Kirby Road in East Memphis received high marks for:
- Use of TV, video and computers in the classroom.
State Concerns:- A state inspector says a caregiver put a child’s bottle on the floor, picked it up and continued using it, which could spread germs.
- An inspector says a crock pot of hot water was on top of a microwave which was on top of a table. Children were seen playing under the table.
- The state says there was not adequate supervision to keep kids safe.
Balmoral Baptist Church Preschool received two stars.
H. Belle’s Child Care Center on Shelby Drive in Whitehaven received high marks for:
- Interaction between staff and children.
- Good personal hygiene of staff members.
State Concerns:- A state inspector says a toddler was given a bottle of milk that had been sitting on a counter for almost two hours. According to the state, milk and juice should not be unrefrigerated for more than one hour.
- The inspector also noticed lapses in supervision when caregivers’ backs were turned to children. The inspector says in one case, two toddlers left the room and went down the hall without supervision.
H. Belle’s Child Care Center received zero stars.
McCormack Surprise Day School on Florida Street in South Memphis received high marks for:
- Using books and pictures in the classroom.
- Encouraging kids to communicate.
State Concerns:- An inspector says a cord from a CD player was unsecured and hanging from a cubbie. The state says children could possibly pull the CD player onto themselves.
- Improper spacing between two pieces of equipment on the playground. The state says proper spacing gives children room to move and prevents a child from falling and hitting another piece of equipment.
McCormack Surprise Day School received three stars.
