MEMPHIS, TN – Loud Music and not enough room are a couple of concerns at some Memphis daycares.

Blessed Beginnings Learning Academy in East Memphis received high marks for:

  • Encouraging children to communicate and use of informal language.

  • The way staff interacts with the children.

State Concerns:

  • There were not enough hooks for the children to hand their coats so their jackets were stored touching each other. The state requires that there be enough furnishing is daycare centers that children’s belongings are not crowded.

  • High shelves and a tall column made it difficult for teachers to see children in one room. The state requires that the space used by children be arranged in a manner that allows staff to easily supervise all areas of play.

Blessed Beginnings Learning Academy received three stars.

Lydia’s Child Enrichment Center in Binghampton received high marks for:

  • Safety practices.

  • The way children are disciplined.

State Concerns:

  • A state observer says loud music was on for most of the day and interfered with the children’s ability to hear language and forced caregivers to speak with raised voices.

  • The center only had dolls representing two races. The state requires all daycare centers to have dolls representing at least three races.

Lydia’s Child Enrichment Center received three stars.

Shelby County Headstart at Delano in Frayser received high marks for:

  • Furnishings for relaxation and comfort.

  • Health practices.

  • Encouraging kids to communicate.

State Concerns:

  • Only three children out of twelve washed their hands after lunch. The state requires children to wash their hands before and after meals.

  • Rubber chips under one of the slides on the playground measured only one inch thick and only four inches under the double slides. The state requires at least six inches of a resilient material under playground equipment.

Shelby County Headstart at Delano in Frayser received three stars.
