MEMPHIS, TN – A three star rating is a badge of honor many childcare centers hope to receive. This week myEyewitnessNews.com is taking a look at centers that are exceeding the state’s expectations.
- The staff at the University of Tennessee Childcare Program received high marks for:
- Good use of books and pictures in the classroom.
- Using appropriate discipline with children
State concerns:- State observer says staff sprayed bleach and water on tables and toys in close proximity of children. The state says the fumes are not good for children to breathe in.
- Inspector says a caregiver kept on the same set of gloves while changing diapers. That can spread germs.
The University of Tennessee Childcare Program received three stars from the state.
Big Momma’s Family Childcare on Hillview in Southwest Memphis received high marks for:
- Good use of the Television.
State concerns:- A caregiver at Big Momma’s told inspectors that she only gets a physical exam once every three years. The state requires caregivers to have an exam every year.
- Inspectors say there was not a raised edge or safety belt on the changing tables, which could put children at risk for falling.
The state gave Big Momma’s Childcare three stars.
Chelsey Childcare Castle on Welchlawn Cove received high marks for:
- Teaching cultural awareness.
State Concerns:- A state inspector says several kids used the same potty training seat and it was not cleaned between uses.
- The bathroom that the children used did not have a step stool.
- One child complained his stomach hurt when the teacher lifted him to the sink to wash his hands. The state says children should have an easy place to wash their hands.
Chelsey Childcare Castle received three stars.
