JACKSON, Miss. (AP) -- A man who killed a Jackson pedestrian in a hit-and-run won't serve jail time.
On May 12, 2007, 53-year-old Garland Neal Hughes was killed on the I-20 frontage road in Jackson.
Hughes was pronounced dead at the scene from massive head trauma.
Charles Michael Stewart was charged with leaving the scene of an accident.
The maximum punishment for leaving the scene of an accident in which a death occurs is five years in prison.
On Monday, the 41-year-old Stewart was sentenced to a five-year suspended sentence. He will serve one year of house arrest and must pay a $1,000 fine.
Circuit Judge Tomie Green said Stewart was only charged with leaving the scene.
