Memphis, TN - In efforts to save money, the City of Memphis will cut back hours for six of its golf courses. Starting Monday, July 6, 2009, Fox Meadows, Davy Crockett, Overton Park, Pine Hill, Riverside and Whitehaven golf courses will be open four days a week instead of seven. None of the courses will be closed Friday through Sunday and Galloway and Audubon golf courses will stay open all seven days.
Paul Evans, the city's administrator of golf operations, says the decreased hours will save about $500,000 a year in part-time salaries. The city's division of parks services will also cut back on chemicals by about $60,000 and equipment by about $80,000.
During budget hearings, Memphis Mayor Willie Herenton's administration had originally proposed reducing hours. But when faced with major shortfalls, he resubmitted a budget with $50 million in cuts, including a proposal to close four golf courses altogether. That idea was later scrapped at council members' objections.
