The Good Housekeeping Research Institute went into the kitchen with the president of the Home Safety Council to point out everyday hazards that can endanger your family. Start by taping a safety zone around the stove to protect your kids from burns.

"Every year there are thousands of children who are badly burned because they pull a hot pan of liquid on themselves," says Meri-K-Appy the president of the Home Safety Council. "It's important to establish a kid free zone around the stove area about three feet so that they can really see what you mean when you say "stay away from this area."

If you're in a hurry and grab this product you might confuse it for a kid's drink.

"Brightly colored cleaning products like this one, especially those with food on the label, could easily be mistaken for a fruit drink by children," says Carolyn Forte the Cleaning Products Director of the Good Housekeeping Research Institute. " So, it's really important to put them out of reach and lock them away."

Accidents can happen even when you're careful, so post emergency numbers near every home phone and store them on your cell phone.

According to the Home Safety Council, the top three causes of injuries in the home are cooking-related burns, falling down the stairs, and being burned by hot water.

While cooking on your range, use back burners with pot handles turned in so your little ones won't be able to reach the scalding cookware.

Cooking is the number one cause of home fires.

In a recent survey by the Home Safety Council, 20 percent of respondents reported experiencing a cooking-related burn in the last year.
